T5 Hailed for Raising the Flag for Pinoy Rock

First Five Inspires New Generation of Musicians

Standing its ground, amid a flood of K-Pop and foreign concerts, Tanduay Rhum continues to be hailed for proudly raising the flag for all-Filipino music once again with the biggest nationwide tour the country has yet to see (and hear.)

The ‘dream team’ of Philippine rock, a.k.a The Tanduay Rhum First Five, is set to hammer all four corners of the archipelago this summer, after taking points north and south in Luzon by storm in April and May. The all-star roster features rock icons Parokya ni Edgar and Wolfgang alongside stalwarts Sandwich, Kamikazee and Chicosci. Joining T5 at the Mindanao kick-off at Panobo and Davao City on June 24 and 25 are tour sponsors No Fear apparel, Pony footwear, and Cherry Mobile, the official mobile phone of the T5 First Five Tour.

Tanduay’s defiant, bold move to make the 2011 tour ‘even bigger, brighter, and louder than ever’ -- while staying true to its focus on original Filipino music --- has gotten the thumbs-up by industry insiders. The tour offers not just one, but five of the country’s top rock icons in every city of its 30 destinations.

Wally Gonzales of the legendary Juan de la Cruz band enthusiastically said, “This tour will make rock alive and kicking! Kudos to the Tanduay folks. Rock bands need this more than ever now that we don’t have a 24-hour rock station anymore.”

Ethel Cachapero of top recording company, Polyeast Records, affirms, “The First Five tour as well as the annual Tanduay Rhum Rock Fest in October are important ways that not only keep rock exciting and accessible to a large audience –- but also develops more talent.”

“The Tanduay Rhum First Five Tour really gives the industry a good jumpstart. It takes Pinoy rock to places where music fans of all ages and genres can experience it for themselves,” says Gladys Basinillo of MediaCom, project head of the tour and Media Director from MediaCom. It’s this kind of support that not just the music business but also the whole entertainment industry needs, explains Vic Valenciano of Sony-BMG Music, who is credited with discovering the Eraserheads.

The T5 First Five Tour is expected to ignite young rockers’ imaginations as well as inspire a whole new generation of musicians. “T5 has found the perfect balance between mass appeal and real talent. Parokya ni Edgar is a role-model for local rock bands because of their top-caliber live and studio performance, while Wolfgang was the first band to really push the heavy rock scene in the country,” says seasoned music critic Joey Dizon.

“Masaya na yung dati, pero siyempre iba rin ang Wolfgang at Parokya,” says Jay Contreras of Kamikazee, “Dalawa sila sa mga haligi ng eksena eh, kaya siguradong mas magiging masaya ngayong taon. Kahit araw-araw mo silang panuorin, di ka magsasawa. Para silang kanin or tubig.”

Sandwich, who returns to the First Five for a third year in a row, completes the ‘Mythical 5’ line-up. “Tanduay Rhum’s choice of bands is absolutely rockin’!” said Mong Alcaraz of Sandwich.
