Toni Gonzaga

Posted by PinoyMusicChoice - ADMIN On Sunday, August 14, 2011
Name: Celestine Cruz Gonzaga
Nickname: Tintin
Screen name: Toni Gonzaga
Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Birthdate: 20 January 1984
TV Shows: MRS (Most Requested Show), ETK (Entertainment Konek), ASAP '06 Wazzup Wazzup Extra Strong, Pinoy Big Brother Season 1 and Celebrity Edition

After signing with ABS-CBN, Toni quickly became a part of such shows like the Most Requested Show (MRS) with Roderick Paulate and Amy Austria. Of which she says, "masaya katrabaho mga beteranong artista kasi aside sa magaling sila at enjoy kasama marami kang matutunan sa kanila." She is also a part of Entertainment Konek (ETK) with Ogie Diaz, which she enjoys because of the fun environment. As if this girl from Taytay wasn't hot enough, she is also one of the hosts of the new reality show, Pinoy Big Brother. "Natutuwa ako at nagpapasalamat kasi they (Management) considered me at they trusted me na maging part ng malaking show na ito," she says. She shares that the offer to be a part of PBB came before their group went to perform in the US for the US Kapamilya Caravan.

Toni grew up in a Christian family with a heart for the people. Even before she started her career in showbiz, Toni has always felt the need to reach out to other people. She was once a Sunday school teacher in her town. She also ran for Baranggay Kagawad in Taytay, a position she lobbied hard for, recalling how she went door to door when she first campaigned. Toni is now in her 3rd year as a Kagawad where she is in charge of the "Clean & Green" campaign of her baranggay. She says, "Inelect ka nila sa posisyon and they have their trust in you na magagawa mo ang trabaho at service mo sa kanila." For Toni, she understands that her celebrity is just one aspect of her life and it shouldn't stop her from doing a good job in the public service arena.

In spite of celebrity stereotypes, Toni enjoys the simple life. On her downtime, she likes to stay at home and to play with her 1 year old Golden Retriever named WuWu (named after her show, Wazzup Wazzup) "Minsan lumalabas kami to eat outside, watch movie, ganun masaya basta kasama mo family mo" she says. She enjoys going back to the basics so much that she says she would easily last in the Big Brother house for 100 days. “Di naman ako mahilig sa mga cellphone, ganun” she shares. Toni admits, though, that the she would miss being able to surf the internet if she were in the Big Brother house. She says that she loves to surf, and she regularly reads the forum posts about her, especially the ones with negative comments. She figures that reading albeit sometimes hurtful opinions help her grow as an artist.

Ever bent on self-improvement, Toni is currently taking AB English – a shift from her Mass Com course. She feels that her new course will help her become a better host. "May mga practicumer kami sa show na nakakausap ko then nakakakuha ako ng idea from them in broadcating" pertaining to the trainees in her shows.

With her numerous hosting jobs & growing career, Toni certainly feels blest. She says she especially enjoys working in Pinoy Big Brother because "masaya kasi at magaan ang ambiance at ang set." When asked about her thoughts on the housemates, she easily says, "Na-meet ko sila personally kasi ako sumundo sa kanila kaya alam ko kung saan sila nakatira at ang atmosphere ng life nila kaya i have no doubts kung bakit sila ganun kumulos sa loob ng bahay, kasi totoong tao sila talaga."

Aside from PBB, Toni enjoys working with people like Vhong Navarro, one of her co-hosts in Wazzup Wazzup. She’s thankful that she has also gotten to work with Ms. Nova Villa, and other co workers in her shows.

Aside from enjoying her work, Toni feels she is just your average 21 year old, who just happens to be on televisoin from time to time. In her 4 years in the business, Toni’s biggest learning in life has been to know whom to trust, and to always follow your parents. "Wala kang mapagkakatiwalaan maliban lang sa mga taong totoo sayo at sa pamilya mo sila yung nariyan para pagkuhanan mo ng lakas at inspirasyon," she affirms. When asked where she sees herself after 5 years, she only smiles and says everything happens in God's purpose and will.

Regine Velasquez

Posted by PinoyMusicChoice - ADMIN On Monday, August 08, 2011
Regine was born in Manila, Philippines on April 22, 1970. She came from a poor family. The family was so poor that her mother would not eat so she can give it to her children. They didn't have any TV so they would go to their neighbor to watch - the neigbor was very rude to them, they also didn't have water so they would shower under the rain with soap!
They moved to Leyte where she was trained by her father in the sea of Henundayan Southern Leyte. At age 9, Regine and her family moved to Bulacan. She has a younger sister named Cacai (married), a younger brother named Jojo, and twin sisters, Diane and Deca (both married).

Regine credits her parents for getting her involved in the music business when they let Regine join singing competitions in remote provinces, and to undergo intensive singing lessons led by her father. Regine was submerged into the water up to her neck and was singing. She also sacrificed eating ice cream until 15 yrs. old.

There were a lot of singing in Regine's house. At two to three years of age, Regine's dad would sing lullaby to get her to sleep and the songs usually her dad would sing was, "You'll Never Know." That was the reason why she doesn't know any nursery rhymes. At the age of three to four, Regine can interpret a whole song. The first song that she was able to memorize on her own was Sharon Cuneta's "Mr. DJ". She sang songs of Carpenters like "Close To You," and songs from Imelda Papin like "Bakit." ("Why") It was one of Regine's favorite as a child, and now her over all favorite singer is Barbara Streisand.

Regine had so many ambitions, she wanted to be a nun, nurse, doctor, but by the age of six, she finally decided that she wanted to sing, so she joined in amateur singing contest. The very first song she sang in a contest was entitled, "Buhat Ng Kita'y Makilala" ("Ever Since I Met You"). Regine didn't know how to read at that time so her father would sing it to her and she would memorize each word her father had sang. Regine lost that contest, but was given a special award for the brave performance. Her constant contest piece is "Bakit Ako Mahihiya". Among 200 competitions she joined in, Regine won 67 of them.

The schools she attended were Henundayan Central School, Southern Leyte; Balagtas Central School(both elementary school); and St. Laurence in Bulacan (high school). She attributes her good English diction to her years at St. Lawrence and to her favorite foreign singers.

The year 2006 marks her 20th anniversary in the music industry. She started the year by releasing her 14th album Covers: Volume 2. Her most ambitious production to date, the album is made up of foreign pop favorites presented with innovative arrangements from rnb/hip hop, pop rock, pop ballad, and blues showcasing her musical versatility. The album contains sixteen songs which are all revivals. Together with Cacai Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid and Raul Mitra, Regine Velasquez launched their own record label, IndiMusic. On October 11, Velasquez reunited with Robin Padilla on the big screen on a movie entitled "Till I Met You".

She held a special 20th Anniversary concert at the Araneta Coliseum, simply titled "Twenty", last Oct 13, and 14, 2006. Velasquez recently recorded Maghihintay Ako the theme song for the sci-fi telenovela Atlantika which airs on GMA7.

In January, 2007, Velasquez was an honoree during People Asia Magazine's "People of the Year" awarding ceremony. She was the recipient of an given an Exemplary Achievement Award for her significant contribution in the field of music and entertainment. She shared the honor with prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, top fashion designer Lulu Tan-Gan and broadcast icon Charo Santos-Concio of ABS-CBN.

She is currently shooting a new film with Piolo Pascual entitled "Paano Kita Iibigin?" under the co-production of Star Cinema and VIVA Films. The movie will hit theaters May of 2007. Regine is also working on the soundtrack for the movie which will feature another original Alcasid song performed by Regine & Piolo with the same title of the movie.

Sarah Geronimo

Posted by PinoyMusicChoice - ADMIN On Monday, August 08, 2011
Sarah Geronimo's rise to fame is one of the most celebrated Cinderella stories in show business. Her modern day rags-to-riches tale continuously inspires thousands to dare to dream, to work hard, to keep believing, and to never say never.

Sarah Geronimo (Sarah Asher Tua Geronimo), the Philippines' talented and charming Popstar Princess, was born on July 25, 1988 to Delfin Geronimo and Divina Geronimo. The third of four children, her siblings are Joanna Rizzie, Sunshine Grace and Ezekiel Gabriel. Sarah grew up in a rented house in Sta. Cruz, Manila, living modestly as her father worked as a PLDT lineman and her mom kept a salon.

At the very young age of 2, Sarah precociously demonstrated a good sense of timing and vocal potential. She could barely utter the words correctly, but Delfin took notice of Sarah's innate penchant for singing. A couple of years later, it became apparent to the family how seriously she wanted to conquer the stage. While the hands of other girls were preoccupied with prized Barbie dolls, hers were firmly cradling a microphone.

When Sarah was 6, she joined a singing contest sponsored by PLDT called Tuklas Talino. Singing in a contest for the first time, she performed The Greatest Performance of My Life and won first prize. Nanette Inventor, a prominent member of the entertainment industry, was one of the judges. She was particularly impressed by Sarah's voice, saying she did not expect that kind of voice to come from a very young child. That victory was her first in a string of first-place finishes in several singing contests sponsored by notable companies.

While other kids spent their days on the playground, Sarah was already determined to participate in more talent shows. Divine would accompany her to auditions, and it was common for them to get a callback, but the offers were mostly for the less significant bit parts. Sarah became part of the Pen Pen De Sarapen cast. In a kiddie movie entitled Sarah, ang Munting Prinsesa, she was cast for a supporting role. She also appeared in the "tweeners" afternoon variety show AngTV on the ABS-CBN network. However, the spotlight seldom landed on her. Despite that, she was always happy just to perform and be able to sing, dance and act. Even at this early stage of her career, she already exhibited extraordinary passion for her craft, and the traits associated with it -- wanting to improve, taking criticisms constructively, and always eager to learn. What she lacked in the glamour of her audition dresses and shoes, she more than made up with talent and determination.

To hone Sarah's skills, Delfin trained her himself for several hours everyday. Mimicking the way Regine Velasquez was trained by her dad by having her sing while submerged neck-deep in the sea, Sarah trained in a makeshift water barrel.

But even with training and talent, she still couldn't seem to find that crack in the wall to break through. When the family business went bankrupt, they found it harder to sustain the expenses of her auditions. Divine resorted to saving the smallest of loose change so they will have jeepney fare for the auditions. Any other individual with weaker resolve would have lost heart. Life was arduous, but the Geronimos bravely plowed on.

In addition to her prowess on the stage, Sarah was a very diligent student at the Dominican School in Lacson Avenue, Manila. Good education was one of the intangible things that their parents wanted to impart to them, and this value was deeply instilled in the Geronimo kids. Sarah's parents would even borrow money so they could send the kids to good and reputable schools. After graduating from elementary school, Sarah continued secondary study at the University of Santo Tomas Education High School. Her friends from high school considered her a class clown. Out of nowhere, she would erupt into a song or a joke, that would send her friends laughing. Her zest for life and engaging, contagious smile easily won people over. She also loves to draw and sketch, and is actually a bookworm. One of her favorite book characters was Harry Potter. On any given day, Sarah was just a teenager enjoying her youth. Apart from usual teenagers though, her concern for her family made her years wiser than her age.

At one point in the Geronimos' lives, they were knee-deep in financial trouble. All at once, there was a sickness in the family, they were being driven out of their house because they could no longer pay the rent, they do not have the tuition money to sustain their education, and making ends meet simply became an impossible feat. Sarah, for her part, wanted to help by joining a nationwide singing contest where a million pesos is part of the grand prize. This was the Star For A Night competition which was hosted by none other than Sarah's idol, Regine Velasquez. Sarah was determined to help with the finances using her God-given talents.

The climb was not easy. Sarah could not picture herself winning the competition after observing the sheer intensity of the other artists she was competing against. However, it was a different story when she stepped on stage and held the microphone. All her insecurities melted and she belted the Celine Dion song To Love You More. She was at the top of her game; in her element. At that very moment when she flung her arms up in the air for the finale, the judges saw in her a star-in-the-making. She won the grand prize of 1 million pesos and an exclusive 10-year contract with Viva Entertainment Group. Mr. Vicente del Rosario, the revered "Boss Vic" of the industry, managed Sarah's career firsthand. This was the big break that she had been dreaming of.

When things settled down after memorable victory, Sarah took care of a few priorities first. She paid off their family debt with the prize money. They had enough left over to pay the hospital bills and their tuition fees. They were able to afford rent and were relieved that they would not be sleeping on the streets. By the time everything was settled, there was no money left for luxury. With no rest in mind, she decided that it was time to work. Her motivation for work was not just for financial stability, but she wanted to soar towards fulfilling her dreams.

After winning as the grand champion of the Star For A Night talent show, Sarah started recording her first album, "Popstar: A Dream Come True" (2003). This album eventually went on to a record of 7 times platinum, reflecting 210,000+ copies sold. Her follow up album, "Sweet Sixteen" (2004) was a certified 3 times platinum. The highly anticipated "Becoming" (2006) album was released internationally, and reached platinum record just a month after its release. The success was followed by "Taking Flight" (2007) which was awarded 2 times platinum, and "Just Me" (2008) which was her second internationally-released album. Included in this album is Sarah's collaboration with one of the BackStreet Boys members, Howie Dorough. She's a big fan of BSB, so when Howie D flew from the US to attend the album launch at the SM Mall of Asia, Sarah was more than ecstatic and grateful. Sarah's latest is "OPM" (2008) which showcased home-grown songs from movies and tv, as well as her past albums. It is a certified platinum as well.
Sarah also signed a contract with ABS-CBN in 2004 and was immediately given her own starring tv series, "Sarah, The Teen Princess" (2004). With ABS-CBN's line up of weekly shows, Sarah was able to hone her acting skills by guesting in several shows like "Your Song", "Love Spell", "Maalaala Mo Kaya", and lighter shows like "John en Shirley", "Wansapanataym", "Yes Yes Show", and "That's My Doc", among others. Eventually, her next starring tv series was launched, "Bituing Walang Ningning" (2006), which earned her praises from critics. The following year, "Pangarap na Bituin" (2007) was conceptualized, and Sarah delivered brilliantly. The last teleserye seemed to have reckoned that the time is right for Sarah to have her own movie.

Although she's starred in supporting yet more defined roles in movies like "Lastikman" (2004), "Annie B" (2004), "Captain Barbell" (2003), and the star-studded "Filipinas" (2003), Sarah is yet to star in her own debut film. The time has come when the script for "A Very Special Love" (2008) was written specifically with her in mind as the lead female role. Fans and critics alike all gushed about how natural and impressive Sarah's acting is. The movie became the ticket for Sarah in winning the Box Office Queen title for 2008 by the prestigious Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Award. The movie was shown in theatre for weeks and immediately catapulted to #3 Highest Grossing Movie in the Philippines of All-Time. Following the heels of the movie's success, the sequel "You Changed My Life" (2009) was released and became the #1 Highest Grossing Movie in the Philippines of All-Time.

On tv, ABS-CBN's variety show ASAP (All-star Sunday Afternoon Party) welcomed her with open arms in 2004, and Sarah has since then been dazzling audiences young and old. She always brings something new to the table, that the show gave her her own segment "The Other Side of Sarah", which was later renamed to "Sarah On Stage". On ASAP, she also shows capacity in carrying out spiels, most likely honed when she did hosting jobs for Search For Star In A Million, Little Big Star and the Little Big SuperStar.
And on stage, where her talents were initially recognized, Sarah has filled up venues both in her native homeland and abroad. Her first concert at the Aliw Theatre entitled "Popstar: A Dream Come True" (2003) gave her the first taste of a standing ovation by an entire crowd. The warm reception of the fans boosted Viva Concert's confidence that she can fill up The Big Dome. And they were not mistaken. Her first concert at the Araneta Coliseum, entitled "The Other Side of Sarah Geronimo" (2005), was a sold out concert. Sarah's supporters stayed until the end of the concert despite the fact that The Dome became one huge oven when the air conditioning units failed to function. A young yet energetic Sarah performed like there's no tomorrow, much to the delight of the fans who seemed to have forgotten about the technical problems. That was the first time she filled The Big Dome to the rafters. The second time was at "Sarah Geronimo In Motion" (2007) where Sarah showed her prowess in singing and dancing. Her latest concert is "Sarah Geronimo: The Next One" (2008), another sold out concert at The Big Dome, where she first played an instrument (a piano) as accompaniment. All 3 of her Araneta Coliseum soldout concerts were brought on tour to other countries around the world. She has wowed both Filipinos and foreigners alike, and her soldout tours speak for themselves that Sarah indeed has arrived.
To date, Sarah is one of the most sought after endorsers of products, services, even government offices and public servants wanting to run for office. She conquered the different media for ads: tv, radio, print, billboards. Because of this, she is also dubbed as the biggest MultiMedia Superstar, transcending different media to reach the general public. With over 60 awards and recognitions to date, and thousands of screaming fans, Sarah is considered a phenomenon in the industry.
One may say that Sarah is very lucky. She is indeed. But it was not all luck. There were tears and trials and heartaches and rejections. She has to make sacrifices as simple as not eating ice cream or chocolate to preserve her voice, to something as complicated as having to take home study and miss regular classes and everything that goes with it. It was her determination to move on, to never back down, that helped her get to where she is now.

Her deeply-rooted values gave her the strength to stay on top of the game. Most importantly, no matter how high Sarah soars, her feet remains planted on the ground. Always grateful to the Lord, always bringing Him glory in everything that she does.

Taken By Cars (Band)

Posted by PinoyMusicChoice - ADMIN On Sunday, August 07, 2011
Introducing...Taken by Cars, a project which has melted a meaningful creation with the experience of indie rhythms, colorful melodies, touches of glowing dance inspired beats, androgynous vocals, nostalgia-infused lyrics, and agressive flows between fast and slow harmonies. Working within streamlined song structures, the band focuses on a language which aims to speak with a sensation all its own. A drive for a new sound emerges as five members stand lovingly to produce a debut which combines the intelligence of postmodern rock as well as their own longstanding influences in blues, chill, dance-punk, and other genres...

Taken by Cars, usually referred to as TbC, is a Filipino indie rock band composed of Sarah Marco on vocals, Bryce Zialcita on lead guitar, Derek "Siopao" Chua on rhythm guitar, Isa Garcia on bass guitar, and Bryan Kong on drums and sampler. They describe their sound as a mixture of electro, shoegaze, and new wave.

Formation (1998–2008)
Zialcita, Chua, Yap, and Kong, who have been friends since elementary school, formed a rock band in 1998 when they were high school sophomores. In an interview with Philippine Daily Inquirer, Zialcita said that their only goal was to play gigs in saGuijo, a café in Makati City, Philippines, which caters to indie rock enthusiasts. They performed during their high school and college days under different names like "Kung Fu Benny," "Mexican Rice Bowl," and "Morning Wood" until finally deciding on the name "Taken by Cars" because of its association with the concept of movement and that they "listened to a bulk of their music in their cars." They also tried out several music genres before settling into its "classic rock-modern indie vibe" when Marco joined the group in 2006. However, after just one month of gigging in small audiences using original materials, the band took a hiatus due to what they described as "personal reasons." They made most out of this idle time writing and recording new songs in preparation for their return. Without a major record label to promote them, the band uploaded their music on MySpace, where they garnered fans from different parts of the world.

Taken by Cars returned to scene in early 2007 and have become notable in Manila's indie rock scene that fans began to compel local radio stations for them to play the band's first single, "A Weeknight Memoir (In High Definition)." On February 2007, the band submitted a demo copy of the single to NU 107, a rock music station in Pasig City, Metro Manila, for its segment "In the Raw." Despite its less-than-perfect audio quality, "A Weeknight Memoir (In High Definition)" received heavy radio airplay and has even reached the top spot of NU 107's daily countdown. Their next single, "Uh Oh," also reached number one in the station's charts.

In early 2011, as the band prepares to release their second album, Time Magazine has named Taken by Cars as one of the five new bands to watch for that year.

Endings of a New Kind (2008–2011)
The band's appeal has gotten noticed by Warner Music Philippines, which signed the group to a distribution deal. Their debut album, Endings of a New Kind, was released in early 2008 under the production of Mong Alcaraz, who is also behind the music of Sandwich and Chicosci. Endings of a New Kind was received warmly by critics and fans. Entertainment writer Diego Rosano P. Mapa reviewed that he "can hear Bloc Party, CSS and New Young Pony Club in their music, but they are doing something that sounds different and refreshing. The drums party like a drum machine, the riffs are shimmering, the basses distorted like an analog keyboard, and Sarah Marco's vocals are gonna rip all the men's boxer shorts to shreds." The album also includes a download card that provides access to remixed versions of its tracks. They also released a mashup version of "Uh Oh" entitled "Uh Oh It's Electro," which was collaborated with house DJ Funk Avy.

Dualist (2011–present)
The band is set to release their second album, "Dualist", on April 15, 2011. The 11-track "Dualist" features a more personal and mature approach on TbC’s signature dance rock sound, which encompasses all the highs and lows the band has gone through over the past three years.

Christian Bautista

Posted by PinoyMusicChoice - ADMIN On Sunday, August 07, 2011

From your average guy to one of Asia’s hottest singing sensations today—this is what has now become of Asia’s Pop Idol and Romantic Balladeer, Christian Bautista.

The start of Christian’s career goes way back to ABS-CBN’s reality singing contest, Star in a Million, where he placed 4th among 10 finalists. In the end, however, he need not win the coveted title to become a famous singer, catapulting himself to certified stardom with hit albums, TV series, and a movie up his sleeve.

Upon ending his Star in a Million stint, Christian signed a contract under Warner Records Philippines where it all began. Upon releasing his self-titled debut album, Christian created a phenomenal hit in Andrew Fromm and Keith Follese’s “The Way You Look at Me,” bringing his album to triple platinum status in no time.

The same song crossed borders and reached international airwaves. Christian became an instant star in Indonesia, so popular that Warner Music Indonesia brought him to their local music scene where he was instantly accepted by his growing number of fans. But his international popularity did not just end there. His music pierced through other Asian countries and invaded the radio charts of Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

In the Philippines, Christian’s instant success led him to become part of a group called the “Champions,” talented singers who have gained their break in showbiz by joining various reality singing contests on television. Christian, along with his co-champions, are mainstays of the hit Sunday variety show of ABS-CBN entitled ASAP. He was also one of the hosts of the Search for the Star in a Million (Season 1) with Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, and Mark Bautista.

Soon after, Christian launched his second album entitled “Completely,” with different packages for the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore respectively. The album attained platinum status in the Philippines and Indonesia.

With Christian’s multitude of fans in Indonesia, he was given his first-ever Indonesian TV special by RCTI, the country’s largest broadcasting station based in Jakarta. The show, entitled “Completely: Christian Bautista,” allowed the young balladeer the opportunity to perform with such big names in the Indonesian music scene as the famous 40-piece Magenta Orchestra, songwriter Andi Rianto, and two of the country’s divas, Krisdayanti and Titi DJ.

Aside from his singing career, Christian has also delved into acting when he bagged the role of Lorenzo in ABS-CBN’s recreation of Pablo S. Gomez’s “Kampanerang Kuba” starring Anne Curtis. Christian also appeared in the silver screen when he was chosen to star as Timothy (a.k.a. Felix Yan) in Regal Films’ Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry, “Mano Po 5: Gua Ai Di.” Christian is also a celebrity endorser for Bench, Smart Telecommunications, Skechers, and Swatch, among others.

Christian then launched his fourth studio album from Warner Music Philippines in 2008 entitled “Captured,” and later that year, played the role of Tony in STAGES’ production of the Broadway musical, West Side Story.

In 2009, Christian signed a recording contract under Universal Music Philippines and released a collection of Jose Mari Chan classics entitled “Romance Revisited: The Songs of Jose Mari Chan,” which was certified gold in a matter of two weeks. The album includes collaboration with many of today’s renowned artists including Sarah Geronimo, Regine Velasquez, Lani Misalucha, and Mr. Jose Mari Chan himself.

Apart from Christian’s success in showbiz, he was able to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of the Philippines (U.P.) in Diliman. He was also a member of the table tennis varsity team while in college.

Rico Blanco

Posted by PinoyMusicChoice - ADMIN On Sunday, August 07, 2011
It would be hard to believe if it were somebody else, but there’s no denying that Rico Blanco is the true master of local music as the singer/songwriter shows no signs of slowing down, and proves that 2009 is still his year and his year only.

Backtrack to the third quarter of 2008: Rico Blanco, former Rivermaya frontman/guitarist/songwriter, releases Your Universe under Warner Music Philippines to a legion of hungry music fans who were in dire anticipation for his newest songs. The album, which instantly spawned two hits, namely the stadium size rock anthem “Yugto” and the infectious pop gem “Your Universe,” garnered both critical acclaim and a warm acceptance not only from fans, but also from fellow peers of Blanco in the music industry as well. “Yugto,” spent more that two weeks at number one on pop radio station MAX FM, while the rock crowd was obviously rejoicing as it spent a whopping five weeks in the charts of the country’s premier rock radio station NU107. As soon as Blanco’s second single “Your Universe” hit the airwaves, Blanco outdid himself with the radio charts as the single spent three weeks at number one on NU107, and spend more that ten weeks on the charts of more radio stations, specifically JAM 88.3, RX 93.1, Monster Radio (which in turn, named him the “RX OPM Solo Artist of the Year”), Magic 89.9 and MAX FM.

Proving to skeptics that success wasn’t only determined by chart positions and on-air requests, Blanco then began a flurry of performance dates all over the nation, proving his hardworking performance ethic to be one of his unmatched strengths as musician. Blanco was tapped with the show-opener honors for all prestigious events of the previous year: Events like the 2008 MyxMo, the 2008 Staying Alive MTV Music Summit, the 2008 Awit Awards and the NU Rock Awards last year where he went home with the “Vocalist of the Year” honors. All insisted Blanco was the perfect way to start a gigantic show, as the musician did not let down and even topped his previous performances with a consistently evolving live show. Shortly after, he was blessed with a more unique honor as he
became MTV’s official UNAIDS spokesperson, a title which has been bestowed upon few artists in the recent years. Meanwhile, amidst his busy performance schedule, Blanco amazingly managed to lord over even the local print media as he became cover artist of MYX Magazine and again, bagged the much-coveted slot in the October 2008 issue of PULP Magazine, currently the country’s biggest and most widely read music publication in the country.

Now if you think that’s already more than the proverbial mouthful, then be ready for what Blanco has in store this ’09. As we speak, Blanco is already covering every side and corner of the archipelago with successful stints and performances at the biggest shows and venues, and is as busy as ever – recently bagging the award for “Best New Artist” at the 2009 Myx Music Awards held at the Meralco Theater. With the awards pilling up, the honors consistently coming in and the shows still pulling in a massive new market to join the guard of longtime supporters, it’s no doubt that Rico Blanco still remains as the leader of the pack of homgrown yet world-class talents. Brace yourselves for the universe of possibilities and successes only one Rico Blanco can deliver.

Astounding. Inspiring. Unbelievable. It may be all that, but honestly, it’s all in a day’s work for this Master of the Universe.

Hale (Band)

Posted by PinoyMusicChoice - ADMIN On Saturday, August 06, 2011
Hale was an alternative rock band from Manila, Philippines. The group consisted of Champ Lui Pio, Roll Martinez, Sheldon Gellada, and Paolo Santiago.

Formation (2004)
Roll Martinez and Sheldon Gellada were music majors from University of Santo Tomas, Champ Lui-Pio was from De La Salle University - College of Saint Benilde and former drummer Omnie Saroca was from Technological University of the Philippines. All four of them met up to form Hale in mid-2004 and soon after signed up to EMI Philippines (now PolyEast Records).

Hale (2005 – 2006)
In 2005, Hale released their debut self-titled album Hale, consisting of singles "Broken Sonnet", "The Day You Said Goodnight", "Kahit Pa", "Kung Wala Ka" and "Blue Sky", together with "Tollgate" which was released together with the re-issuing of the album on March 2, 2006. "The Day You Said Goodnight" marked the first steps of Hale's massive success to the mainstream and gained tremendous popularity as the singles were released. "The Day You Said Goodnight" was also nominated many times by most of the music media as OPM Song Of The Year 2005. Soon, the band was also nominated as Band Of The Year 2005 and Best New OPM Artist for 2005.

Hale re-issued their debut album together with the single "Tollgate" on March 2, 2006.[1] At the same year, the debut album had reached Triple Platinum Certification (90, 000 copies sold). They were also chosen to make a commercial endorsement for Nescafé Philippines and a jingle "One Moment, One Nescafé" written by them in promotion of the Nescafé products.

Twilight (2006 – 2008)
Hale released their sophomore effort Twilight on September 30, 2006, consisting of singles "Waltz", "Hide And Seek", "Shooting Star" and "The Ballad Of". The music video of "Waltz" was also nominated many times as the Most Favorited Music Video in 2006, marking another step of Hale's success to the mainstream. The album was also certified Gold (15, 000 copies sold) a week after its release.

It was said that the band encountered tremendous amount of pressure to record their sophomore effort. On the other hand, their effort was meant to reflect their success from the preceding album as a band where their musical influences and styles had emcompassed a wider spectrum of musical arrangements.

Treehouse Productions (2008)
Having encountered pressure from the mainstream successes of their first two albums, the band self-imposed a 10-month hiatus. During then, they established the Treehouse Productions where they would help the needy children suffering from mental and physical illnesses through music. In the process, other music acts eventually signed up for Treehouse Productions to help the band achieve their objectives, such as Rico Blanco and Mayonnaise.

Above, Over And Beyond (2008 – 2009)
Soon after their hiatus, they released their third effort, Above, Over And Beyond, which consisted of singles "Pitong Araw", "Leap Of Faith", "Over And Over (And Over Again)" and "Sandali Na Lang" on April 28, 2008. Even before the release of their third effort, "Sundown", which featured Monique Rae, was released as a jingle for the promotion of the local toothpaste product, Close-Up. Despite expectations, album sales for the album was low due to economic woes of the band's music label, EMI Philippines. As a result, the band resulted in promoting the album independently which, however, saw limited success. Hence, just like Twilight, the success of the album did not come up to par with the former albums.

Hale drummer and percussionist Omnie Saroca left the band in the same year to focus on other issues outside the music industry. In turn, former drummer Paolo Santiago of Join The Club joined the band to replace Omnie Saroca in late-2008.

Kundiman (2009 – 2010)
Released on July 27, 2009, the band started promoting their album soon after its release, about a month after the first single, Bahay Kubo, went for radio airplay. Other singles include "Kalesa", "Harinawa", and "Magkaibang Mundo".

Of all eight songs in the album, written in Tagalog, seven were written by Champ Lui Pio and the album's Yakap by Roll Martinez. They also sought guidance with OPM band Mayonnaise's Monty Macalino in the song composition and arrangements of the album.

Break up (2010)
The band went on their separate ways on August 6, 2010, as announced publicly by band vocalist Champ Lui Pio, who announced his intention to start a solo music career and as an actor. Champ's decision to disband Hale was allegedly kept from his bandmates, who were not given prior notice and only learned of the break-up after his public announcement.
